Christ trees/ Paint Stick trees

Here is one of the projects we have been working on.
What a great way to remember Christ this Christmas!
The steps are simple...cut 5 Home Depot paint sticks. Yes, they need to be from Home Depot. I will spare you the details, but we tried other sticks. Cut one stick into a 2" and 7". Another stick, 3" and 6".  Another stick, 4"  and 5" one at 8" and the last at 9". You will also need a 3-1/2" block and an 18" dowel.
We cut 4 sheets of DSP (Designer Series Paper) to 8-1/2 x 11 so they would fit in our printer. Download the words with lines HERE , without lines HEREThen we cut the words in strips and mixed the papers up. That will give you enough words for 8 trees. You could do all of the words the same color instead of mixing up the pages and get 2 trees out of one page.   Every bodies favorite was the one made with Mocha Morning paper, so added the paper to the download if you want to print it in color. You can do that HERE.  The sheep we found at Walmart, but anything would work. The pictures on the front we bought in a pack of 100 for $2.00, you can order those HERE. Any star till work on the top.  We love the one we used, that of course is from Stampin' Up!

******UPDATE August 2023******
I don't know how to access the files from here and I no longer have the original images.  So I pulled this from my email and I am hoping you can copy the image and stretch it out to fill your page!

  1. We are gearing up to make this in our RS but I have a couple questions: what size of the Christ pictures did you buy? Did you cut the 5x7's down? Also, was the star a stamp or an actual star? Thanks in advance

    1. We used the pass along cards. Then just trimmed them square. The star stamp we used is no longer available. Any star will work you just have to score from point to point.

  2. What is the approximate cost of each of these?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Only a couple dollars. We got the paint sticks for free at home depot. I tried to buy them, but they wouldn't let me. They were really nice too. The sheep were a dollar from Walmart. and we just bought the dowels and blocks.

      Delete
    2. Where did you buy the blocks and dowels from?

      Delete
    3. You can no longer get the paint sticks for free, you can get 10 for $0.98. After pricing everything, buying small prints of Christ from Deseret Bookstore, doing without the lamb, and buying the ribbon at Costco for the best deal, we were able to make these for $5 each. Hope that gives you a better idea.

    4. You don't want the 10 for .98 ones, they are too small. The big ones are 3/$1.

  3. Did you just hot glue the paint sticks to the dowels? And I'm guessing you Mod Podged the paper to the sticks?

    1. We used wood glue. Modge Podge will work great. We used a glue from Stampin' Up, Tombow multi purpose liquid glue.

      Delete
    2. Sorry, that wasn't very clear. We used the wood glue to adhere the dowels to the paint sticks and The Tombow multipurpose glue fro the word strips. If we did it again we would probably put an adhesive sheet on the back of the DSP before we cut it.

  4. How long is the dowel you used? Love the idea! Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  5. Could you please clarify the order of the dowels? Since we have so many lenghts, how are they all coming together? Thank you!

  6. Sorry to bother you, but could you please tell me the height of the star? This is an awesome looking project and since I live on a small remote island, I want to get an idea of the size star I'll need before I order supplies online. Thanks so much!

  7. I love these!! I am making them for all my YW for Christmas! I do have a question. When I put my DS paper in the printer and print it, the words are to small height wise for the paint sticks. Length wise it is fine. I have it set on Landscape. Any other suggestions to get it the same size as the paint stick?

    1. Try saving the image to your computer then print it borderless. I have to go into my printer properties to change that. It is super close on the end of "Bread of Life" though. If each word had a little border around, it would still look great.

      Delete
    2. What is DS paper and where can I find it? Thanks.

  8. Is this your idea, or did you find it some where else? Also is it free to use.

  9. I confess I am not a computer whiz so please forgive me for the silly question I am going to ask. When I click on HERE to print the words, both the ones with lines and without, it prints a blank page other than the website address at the bottom of the page and the page number at the top. It does not allow a way to download or to save, only to print. Can you offer a suggestion as to what I might try or what I'm doing wrong. I never have this problem...it will always allow me to save or to download. I have Windows 8.1, by the way. I realllllly want to make this, and have already trimmed 10 pages to fit my printer. Thank you SO much. Blessings.

  10. HELP!!! I can't find the lamb figurine anywhere!!! I've been to 3 Walmarts in California and called one in Utah, checked their website and 3 hours of searching the internet with NO LUCK!! I'M DESPERATE!

  11. Has anyone found an affordable source for the 3.5" wood block? I've found them for around $5 but it would be about twice the cost of the other materials combined. Ideas? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Patti Hodford, I used a 2x4 cut at 3.5", which makes 1.5 x 3.5 x 3.5. I cut them from scrap pieces I had on hand. It worked fine and turned out really cute. If you don't like it being narrower you could glue 2 pieces together. You can buy a 2x4 for cheap at any home center and they will even cut 5hem to the length you want. A 2x4 will make a lot of these blocks. The cheapest ones are called precuts. Hope this helps.

  13. This is a great project!! SO I am hung up on the stars. Are they made out of paper? I guess I'm not getting that part at all. Would love if you could explain a bit more on the star part! Thanks so much! To me it looks like 2 paper stars glued back to back? You can kind of see the other side but I could be wrong..... and what size are they? Thanks so much! Making this for a RS activity and need my sample done soon! Have it all but the star!

  17. I love this project and have printed the word page but cannot figure out how to maneuver the words so they are farther apart so that I can cut them with space on either side. Can you give me any directions for that. I hope my question isn't too confusing :)

I know how much work it is to do these things and I know the time it takes to blog and I know i"m asking a lot, but you'd save me!! Thanks for considering and sharing! - Jocelyn

  21. The paint sticks at my Home Depot have a curved "handle" area at one end. Is there an alternative paint stick you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have made these and I used the large thicker paint sticks that are used for the 5 gal paint buckets. I got mine at Lowe's. It's OK if the handle area is curved, I think they all are. You only use the rest of the stick, not the handle. I made snowmen ornies with the left over handles. The turn out sooo pretty.

  25. When I downloaded the Mocha Morning paper, the word Exemplar Deliverer show up with a white background. Is that the way it is supposed to look? It doesn't seem to look that way in your picture of the tree, but maybe that is a different paper... Is there another way I can get this to work?

  61. Hello. Our YW presidency would like to make this for our Christmas activity. I am living in Italy and don't have access to Home Depot. Can you please tell me why the Home Depot paint sticks are best for this project. Are they thicker? Sturdier? I just want to know what to look for as I hunt around my small town to see if I can find all the items necessary to make this. Thank you for your input. Diane.
